A 45-year-old “walk-on” soccer coach at West Ranch High School was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Hart district officials confirmed Wednesday.

Newhall resident Fausto Arana was arrested at 2:45 a.m. Sunday and booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to a Sheriff’s Department booking report.

He was cited at the station and released, the report states.

Although employed by the district, walk-on coaches are not teachers or district staff members, said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

“They do have to apply and an application is reviewed,” Pinsker said. “They go through a full Justice Department background check and are fingerprinted.”

Pinsker said she was prohibited from discussing how the district might respond to Arana’s arrest, citing employee confidentiality rules.

“I cant’ discuss any follow-up. Each case is handled individually,” she said. “It’s handled on a case-by-case basis.”

Arana coached the varsity boys soccer team at West Ranch High School. He was also previously the varsity boys head coach at Golden Valley and Hart.
