Santa Clarita council members choose continuity for city commissions

Continuity was the name of the game this week as Santa Clarita City Council members largely elected to appoint familiar faces to sit on a selection of city commissions.

All of the 12 candidates nominated by City Council members Tuesday night to serve on the city’s Arts Commission; Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission; Planning Commission; and Open Space Preservation District Financial Accountability and Audit Panel were approved unanimously, and almost universally without discussion.

One new commissioner tabbed Tuesday was Kevin D. Korenthal, who was appointed to a position on the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission by first-term City Councilman Dante Acosta.

Acosta’s other appointees were all sitting commissioners who received new four-year terms.

Tim Burkhart was appointed to the Planning Commission, Wendelin “Wendy” Langhans to the Financial Accountability and Audit Panel and Susan Shapiro to the Arts Commission.

“Everybody that applied made my job a little bit more difficult in the sense that there were a lot of great people,” Acosta said. “And it’s really heartening to live in a community where so many people want to serve their community.”

The other two City Council members who nominated commissioners Tuesday night — Mayor Laurene Weste and Councilwoman Marsha McLean — also largely nominated their sitting commissioners for additional terms.

The one exception was McLean’s appointee to the Financial Accountability and Audit Panel, Sandra Cattell.

McLean’s other appointees were Lisa Eichman to the Planning Commission, Dianna Boone to the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission and Dr. Michael Millar to the Arts Commission.

Weste’s appointees were Dennis Ostrom to the Planning Commission, Ruthann Levison to the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, Patti Rasmussen to the Arts Commission and Susan Orloff to the Financial Accountability and Audit Panel.

The terms of office for those appointed Tuesday night run until July 31, 2018.
