DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) — Divers have ended a search in the waters off Dana Point for the body of a man who disappeared after going under a large wave.

Officials said late Sunday that divers were called off — but lifeguards, sheriff's deputies and the Coast Guard will continue ground and air observations for the next several days.

Authorities say the 60-year-old man's family contacted a lifeguard when he didn't surface at Salt Creek Beach late Saturday morning.

A large search and rescue effort involving lifeguards, snorkelers and helicopter crews was launched, but as hours passed the effort turned into a recovery mission. Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock says Sunday's effort was hampered by poor underwater visibility.

The National Weather Service had issued a high surf advisory Saturday warning swimmers of dangerous ocean conditions.
