VENTURA (AP) — A former Ventura neurosurgeon facing allegations of performing unnecessary procedures has surrendered his California medical license.

The Ventura County Star says (http://bit.ly/VO1vmG) as of Monday, Dr. Aria Omar Sabit can no longer practice medicine in the state.

His attorney, Peter Osinoff, says Sabit has not practiced in California in years and is licensed in Michigan. Osinoff says Sabit decided it would be too expensive to contest the regulatory board's accusations involving former patients at Community Memorial Hospital.

The accusations include gross negligence during spinal surgeries, claims in medical records of doing things he did not do and repeated unneeded procedures.

Records show Sabit admitted responsibility to some allegations, most involving record keeping and none dealing with unnecessary surgery.

Community Memorial says it asked the board to investigate Sabit soon after he left in 2010.
