As the new school year begins Monday at College of the Canyons, school officials are launching a program to help students succeed when they arrive at college inadequately prepared.

Called “Skills4Success,” the two-part campaign will introduce new student support strategies as well as publicly recognize several COC student success stories.

The entire campaign will be funded by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Basic Skills Initiative, which is a multi-year effort to improve curriculum, instruction, student service, assessment, program practices and campus culture in the areas of ESL and college success skills across the state.

The first part of the campaign is visual as student-designed pole banners and posters will be placed in highly visible areas around COC’s Valencia and Canyon Country campuses, each depicting student success stories and quotes.

This section of Skills4Success has been tagged “Success at College of the Canyons is ...” and will include a student’s definition of success.

“We want to put that success on display so that students, staff and campus visitors can see that every day,” said Audrey Green, associate vice president of academic affairs at the college. “It’s the college’s way of saying your success matters to us.”

The second component to this campaign involves implementing several strategies, including: asking students why they are in college, helping them navigate through the various on-campus services and departments, and soliciting feedback about individual student experiences.

“We want the culture of success to be contagious at College of the Canyons,” said Green. “More importantly, we want that message of success to come directly from our students and be shared in a way that will reach our entire campus community.”
