Family Promise of the Santa Clarita Valley, a nonprofit organization serving local homeless families, is looking for volunteers to assist with its biggest fundraising event of the year – Box City.

The event, to be held Sept. 27, raises awareness about and compassion for homelessness in the local community as participants spend one night in a cardboard box at Bridgeport Park.

“Family Promise relies on the time and talent of local residents to pull together this fun and heart-warming event,” said Laurie Ender, president of the Family Promise Board of Directors.

The organization is looking for volunteers of all ages and abilities, said Dee Dee Jacobson, volunteer coordinator for Box City.

“Youth volunteers can receive service credit for their participation, and it’s a perfect event for community groups, sports teams, church groups and other organizations,” Jacobson said. “We even have a dedicated coordinator specifically for teen volunteers.”

Since 2011, Family Promise has been offering shelter, meals and support services to families without homes. Its cost-efficient and effective community response to family homelessness is made possible through the generosity of local congregations, volunteers and donors.
