Guests attending the 2009 "ARTstART Festival" at College of the Canyons May 15-17 won't just be browsing the aesthetic achievements and artistic offerings of the college.

A number of local elementary school students will be presenting artwork during the festival's student show and ‘Instructor Spotlight' showcase.

Hosted by the College of the Canyons Fine and Performing Arts Division, the 2009 ARTstART Festival is a weekend-long event designed to offer community members a glimpse inside the daily activities of the college's Fine and Performing Arts Division, while highlighting students' work and providing a behind-the-scenes look at the Division's facilities.

Attendees are able to visit buildings across campus to view and experience samplings from the college's art, music, dance, theatre, animation, radio/television/video/film (RTVF), graphic design and studio arts departments.

As a unique addition to the festival, a selection of Saugus Union School District (SUSD) students from Charles Helmers, North Park and Plum Canyon Elementary Schools will have their work featured in the SUSD Student Show and ‘Instructor Spotlight' from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday May 16, in Mentry Hall 115.

Including the work of one student from each grade level, from each school, the Student Show and ‘Instructor Spotlight' showcase will exhibit original 2-D artwork including paintings, drawings and photography projects.

"Being featured at ARTstART 2009 is a tremendous opportunity for our students to go through the valuable and enriching experience of creating art and see their work validated in a public venue," said Linda Candib, fourth-grade teacher at Charles Helmers Elementary School. "The students who submitted their art work are very excited and extremely enthusiastic about having it seen."

With a schedule of additional activities including live music, student theatre performances, modern dance presentations, gallery exhibits, interactive lectures, in class demonstrations and a unique open house and tour of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons (PAC), the 2009 ARTstART Festival is sure to include something for everyone.

The festival also coincides with the college's New Works Festival, a collection of plays written and performed by local playwrights, and the scheduled Tom Rush with the Lovell Sisters PAC performance on May 16.
