Reports of possible gunfire near a Newhall elementary school prompted a brief school lockdown and road closure Wednesday morning, but the all-clear was sounded within 10-15 minutes, officials said.

“Everything’s fine,” an employee at Wiley Canyon Elementary School said around 9:20 a.m. after the lockdown was called upon reports of shots fired around 8:45 a.m.

Traffic at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Wiley Canyon Road was halted briefly but was flowing freely by 9:15 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies responded quickly after a woman called the station to report she heard possible gunfire inside a home in the 25100 block of Wiley Canyon Road near Lyons Avenue, Deputy Josh Dubin said. They immediately stopped traffic at the intersection and sent in extra deputies to help secure the area.

The house where the shots were believed to have been fired was searched. sheriff’s Lt. Tom Bryski said, “and there was nothing there.” The entire lockdown and intersection closure lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes.

In the end, deputies questioned two people but found no evidence of wrongdoing.

On-campus supervisors spotted some activity and notified sheriff’s deputies, prompting the action, Wiley Canyon Principal Tim Lankford said after the all-clear was sounded.

“We were in lockdown briefly,” Lankford said. “We secured all the classrooms and had the students move away from the windows.”

He noted a heightened sensitivity among school staff in light of online threats made this week against students at William S. Hart Union High School District schools. Two juveniles have been arrested for those threats.

“We’re glad everything worked out,” Lankford said.
