A bear lying dead on the southbound side of Interstate 5 tied up traffic Thursday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The first reports of the dead bear lying in the far-right lane of I-5 south of the McBean Parkway on-ramp came in at 8:35 a.m., CHP Sgt. Rob Lund said.

When officers first pulled up to the animal just south of the McBean Parkway on-ramp, they weren't sure it was dead, he said.

"They finally saw that it was mangled pretty bad," he said.

The CHP removed the bear minutes after receiving the call, Lund said.

The cause of death, and how the bear got onto the freeway, is unknown.
