Canyon High graduate Andrew Schantz signed a rookie free agent contract Tuesday with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Schantz marks the fourth football player with local ties to join an NFL team.

Troy Nolan, a former College of the Canyons and Arizona State safety, was the only one of the four to get drafted.

He went in the seventh round of this past weekend’s NFL Draft to the Houston Texans.

Schantz joins Valencia graduate and former COC wide receiver Shane Morales as locals who inked free agent deals.

Morales signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Canyon graduate Nate Longshore, who was scheduled to be inducted in the first class of the Canyon Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, is trying out in rookie minicamp with the Miami Dolphins.

Schantz, a 6-foot-1-inch 234-pound linebacker, played two years at Portland State.

He started nine games as a junior in 2007, earning an honorable mention All-Big Sky honor. Schantz was second on the team in tackles and added three sacks and three forced fumbles.

As a senior, he was even better.

Schantz led the Vikings with 115 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. He also made an interception and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

He also was named an Associated Press third-team All-American.

Prior to coming to Portland State, Schantz spent two seasons at San Diego State.
