A Valencia man arrested in May on suspicion he wounded a woman in her eye during a road rage incident has been ordered to stand trial on the charges filed against him.

Cory Allen Flenory, 28, appeared for a preliminary hearing Tuesday in San Fernando Superior Court on charges of mayhem, vandalism causing damage of more than $400 and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, District Attorney’s Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said.

Preliminary hearings allow prosecutors to present evidence, after which a judge decides whether the case should go to trial.

The case against Flenory began Tuesday morning and was over by noon.

“He was held to answer on those charges,” Santiago said.

Deputy District Attorney Guy Shirley reduced the vandalism charge from a felony to a misdemeanor, the spokesman added.

Shirley alleges Flenory used a BB gun as a deadly weapon. Prosecutors also say he has a 2005 felony conviction in Tulare for carjacking, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, Shirley said in May.

The felony complaint filed against him also includes one count of injuring a spouse for an unrelated incident on May 5. That incident also involved a BB gun, Santiago said.

On May 17, Flenory allegedly shot one victim in the eye after a confrontation over a collision in a Walmart parking lot in Stevenson Ranch, Shirley said at the time of the arrest.

The victim, a photographer, suffered permanent damage to her eye, Santiago said in June.

She underwent emergency surgery to save her eye. Surgeons at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center spent seven hours attending to the woman’s injury.

Deputies who arrested Flenory on May 19 used pepper spray to detain him after he allegedly kicked out the window of a sheriff’s car, officials said. He remains in custody with bail set at $1,275,000.

If convicted as charged, Flenory faces multiple life terms in state prison.
