A man is in custody today charged on suspicion of drunk driving after a handful of motorists worked together to detain him for officers of the California Highway Patrol early Sunday morning, according to a CHP officer.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. Sunday, CHP officers responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a red Chevy Avalanche and a black Mercedes-Benz, in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just south of Quail Lake Road, the officer said.

No one was reported to be hurt in the crash.

When they arrived at the scene, CHP officers reported that a man who appeared to be about 22 years old, wearing a blue shirt and black pants appeared to be drunk.

“You have people holding the guy from the traffic,” the CHP officer told the dispatcher from the scene.

At least three motorists had stopped their vehicles near the crash and were working to detain the suspect.

Some of the motorists were observed trying to slow traffic through the area.

“He was arrested for drunk driving,” a CHP officer told The Signal at 5:30 p.m.

The suspect’s name was not disclosed late Sunday afternoon.
