Saugus graduate Tommy Milone was traded by the Oakland Athletics to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Sam Fuld on Thursday.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have traded left-hander and Saugus High graduate Tommy Milone to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Sam Fuld.

The A’s announced the deal Thursday morning before the trade deadline.

On Thursday afternoon, Milone commented on the trade via his Twitter account, saying: "Thank you to all the Athletics fans, coaches, and players for such a memorable 3 years of my career. So grateful to be a part of such a special team. Wish nothing but the best for them. Now, excited to start this new chapter in my career with the Twins! Can't wait!!"

Milone requested a trade given his recent success and demotion to Triple-A Sacramento. The left-hander went 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA over 11 starts before he was sent down July 5 following the trade for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs.

Milone, 27, made his Major League debut with the Washington Nationals in 2011, making five appearances and tossing 26 innings. He was traded to the A's following that season.

In three seasons with Oakland, Milone finished with a 31-22 record and a 3.84 ERA. He's 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts and 96 1/3 innings in the Majors so far this season.

Fuld began the season with Oakland. The A’s liked Fuld coming out of spring training but designated him for assignment April 12. The Twins claimed him off waivers eight days later.

He and newly acquired Jonny Gomes are likely to compete for time in left field after Yoenis Cespedes was traded to Boston for left-hander Jon Lester and Gomes.
