Treat refugees with compassion

The relatively small country of Italy (compared to the USA) has managed to take in more than 70,000 illegal immigrants (refugees) fleeing poverty, war and oppression in Northern Africa.

Not only that, but the European country’s navy actively searches for people in the small boats in which refugees make this perilous journey so they can be rescued and brought safely to Italian shores, where they are fed, cared for and housed.

They continue to come, thousands every year, and Italy continues to treat them with compassion and dignity.

How very different than the sad situation we have here, where the good folks of Texas have the National Guard manning the border to turn people back while pundits and politicians try to outdo each other in criticizing every effort to work out a solution to this situation, and we hear how our nation cannot afford to take care of these hordes of illegals.

Guess Italy is either more prosperous than the United States or more compassionate — or both — judging by how its people treat their fellow human beings.
