Service men and women receive thousands of minutes of call time

Since its program started just over two years ago, Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary, with the support of Newhall and surrounding communities, has collected more than 500 cell phones and accessories that provided more than 31,000 minutes of call time to U.S. service men and women.

Under the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, residents drop off old or unwanted cellphones at the mortuary, which are recycled in exchange for calling cards sent to service men and women overseas.

“Eternal Valley has been a tremendous advocate for our troops and Cell Phones for Soldiers,” said Robbie Barguest, co-founder of the nine-year-old nonprofit organization.

“Through its phone recycling efforts, we’ve been able to provide free international calling cards to hundreds of troops, allowing them a chance to make a precious call home.”

Phones and accessories can be dropped off daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the reception area of Eternal Valley at 23287 North Sierra Highway in Newhall.
