Construction will close freeway lanes in SCV

As part of a project that is constructing truck lanes on Interstate 5 between Pico Canyon Road and Lyons Avenue and the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, Caltrans will implement several freeway closures next week. Closures will begin Monday and continue through Friday, Aug. 1.

Up to three lanes of northbound I-5 between the end of the existing truck lane and Lyons Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. At least one lane will be open at all times.

Up to three lanes of southbound I-5 between Lyons Avenue and the end of the existing truck lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. At least one lane will be open at all times.

The Clagrove Boulevard on- and off-ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The southbound I-5 connector to northbound the southbound 14 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The project is widening the freeway and bridges to add a truck lane to the outside of I-5 in both directions by paving the median area and outside shoulder, and shifting the mixed-flow lanes inward.

Three median retaining walls and two short sections of outside retaining walls will be built to accommodate this widening.

The southbound truck lane will extend from Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Avenue to the 14, while the northbound lane will run from the 14 Freeway to Gavin Canyon.

The new truck lanes will ease traffic delays, improve goods movement, absorb traffic growth due to population increase, and enhance safety by separating truck traffic from passenger vehicles, Caltrans said in a news release.

Construction began in May 2012 and will be completed in late 2014.
