Two elementary-school-aged entrepreneurs set up shop Tuesday on a Newhall street corner, enjoying an age-old summer custom: operating a lemonade stand.

Emily Widders and Sarah Wathen offered fresh cold lemonade paired with brownies and cookies for 50 cents to passing motorists at the corner of Valley and Eighth streets. The two girls said they were saving up for their futures.

“I’m raising money for college,” Emily said.

The girls used teamwork to make the best of their bake sale.

“I made the brownies and Emily made the cookies,” Sarah said.

The girls’ moms collaborated on the business deal, with Deborah Widders suggesting the lemonade stand to Diane Wathen, who jumped at the chance.

“Emily’s asked for the past three years to have one, so when they offered, she was so excited,” Wathen said.

Widders was also happy to pass the tradition on to her daughter.

“I used to do this when I was younger with my cousin,” she recalled. “We decided to invite my daughter’s friend and get them to do it with us because they’ve never done this before.”

There was no word on the extent to which the girls were able to fatten their college funds.
