Hart district: No teacher layoffs

Increased class sizes, a shorter work year and salary reductions remain under consideration

More than 90 teachers and counselors at the William S. Hart Union High School District have learned that their jobs are safe for the 2009-10 school year. The district Friday reversed its decision to lay off those teachers and counselors.

The Hart district issued its layoff notices in March to meet a March 15 legal deadline. It rescinded layoff notices for 62 teachers earlier this week. Friday’s decision brought the total of layoff cancellations to more than 90.

“From the beginning, the board was resolute that, despite the budget crisis, no employee was to lose their job,” Superintendent Jaime Castellanos said. “We are elated that we were able to attain this goal so that all employees keep their jobs intact.”

The Hart District Teachers Association welcomed the district’s decision.

“Those who were unfortunate enough to receive the notices and deal with that uncertainty, we’re glad that that’s over and it ends up being a positive (that) they’ll be employed next year,” President Leslie Littman said Friday.

Despite avoiding layoffs, the Hart district is still looking for ways to offset a project $24 million deficit through the 2010-11 school year. The district is considering increasing class sizes, reducing the work year and making salary reductions.

The district was able to take back the layoff notices after analyzing the number of teachers it would lose through natural attrition and the district’s early-retirement incentive program for senior teachers, Littman said.

“As we continued to re-evaluate the budget and the district’s programmatic needs, we looked for ways to maintain the district’s financial stability and still preserve all of the jobs,” said Rochelle Neal, assistant superintendent of human resources.
