Listeners gathered at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center for an afternoon of sherbet and showtunes as the SCV Men of Harmony Chorus and Quartets presented its 38th annual A Cappella Harmony Show and Ice Cream Social on Sunday.

Nostalgic performances by the Men of Harmony featured a variety of musical styles, including barbershop harmony, doo-wop, swing-era jazz, tin pan alley musicals and classic pop tunes that took visitors back in time.

The show also featured a magician and a guest appearance by Judy Turkheimer, the singing group’s choreographer, who sang a song with the group.

“She’s been singing her whole life,” said Steve Turkheimer about his wife Judy’s appearance onstage with the Men of Harmony.

“She’s very passionate about singing,” he said, smiling as he ate his rainbow sherbet.

There was a little bit of magic and a whole lot of singing from the four men that make a group called the Blue Plate Special.

Veronica Pinchard, a volunteer at the center, served up several scoops of ice cream for about 100 social attendees who showed up for ice cream and song.

“They do such a wonderful job,” she said, referring to an afternoon of songs by the Men of Harmony. “It was amazing.”
