A team representing the U.S. competed in an International Contact Karate Tournament in St-Jerome, Canada.

The prestigious event in May hosted teams from Russia, Japan and Canada.

Shannon Laurin (light weight) and Cassie Greenough (heavy weight), both from Santa Clarita, as well as Eileen Santiago (middle weight) from New York, represented the U.S. women’s team.

After a remarkable performance against very strong Russian and Canadian teams, they won the gold medal.

In the men’s team event, the U.S. team also demonstrated a lot of talent and won the silver medal. Team members are John Michael Laurin (middle weight) and Gabriel Harries (heavy weight) from Santa Clarita, as well as Vaquine Stuart (light weight) from New York.

In the individual event, John Michael Laurin, only 17 years old, competed in the men’s division and surprised everybody with a gold medal.

His exceptional performance was made even more remarkable by the fact that Russia had their best karate fighter, who was undefeated and won several world and international tournaments.

In the women’s individual event, Shannon Laurin, only 18, also impressed the crowd and, like her brother, won the gold medal.

In the weapon form division, Shannon Laurin received the gold while John Michael Laurin got the silver.

In the Kata Division, Cassie Greenough won the gold, and Shannon Laurin got the bronze. Lorna Laurin also demonstrated a strong form.

With more than 400 karatekas present, the performance of the U.S. team was nothing less than exceptional.
