16 candidates line up for open Saugus board seat

The Saugus Union School District board is expected to choose a replacement for Stephen Winkler on Friday. Winkler was removed from the board because he did not live within the district's boundaries.

Sixteen candidates will be interviewed Friday to determine who will fill the vacant seat on the Saugus Union School District board.

The first candidate will be interviewed at 4:45 p.m. Friday, with interviews taking place in the district’s offices at 24930 Avenue Stanford, according to a schedule released by the district.

The candidates, in order of when they will be interviewed, are: Kacey Thorps, Susan Huffman, David Powell, Michael Guinn, Joe Nocella, Alyssa Janney, Arnoldo Jaquez, Jr., Mark Ross, Allison Devlin, Patsy Ayala, Noli Wiesen, Bruce Fox, James Temple, Eileen Connolly, Julie Olsen and Rashmi Gupta.

There will be two breaks between candidate interviews, one lasting from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and the other lasting from 8:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., according to the schedule.

The last candidate interview is scheduled to start at 9:15 p.m.

Following the interviews, board members are expected to vote on someone to fill the seat.

The 16 candidates are vying to fill the seat once held by Stephen Winkler. A judge ruled last month that Winkler “has usurped, intruded into and unlawfully held and exercised the office of trustee of the Saugus Union School District, and is not entitled to, and is excluded from, the office.”

Winkler’s term lasts through November 2015.

The Saugus board will have to decide how to fill another seat in the near future as board member Doug Bryce, who was re-elected in November 2013, announced earlier this year that he intends to resign his seat as he is moving out of the area.
