A woman found a box marked “explosives” in a storage unit and took it to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Wednesday, prompting a swift response by sheriff’s bomb squad detectives.

There was no explosion, no threat made and no evacuation of the station or the Civic Center area, Deputy Josh Dubin said.

The box, however, did contain a “small industrial explosive,” he said.

The woman walked into the lobby of the Sheriff’s Station on Magic Mountain Parkway about 1 p.m. Wednesday carrying a small cardboard box with a manufacturer label that read “Explosives,” Dubin said in a news release,

Sheriff’s Arson Explosives Detail detectives arrived and removed the box. Its contents were still sealed in what appeared to be factory packaging, Dubin said.

“The female claimed she found the box in a storage unit she owned,” he said.

The box was placed outside the station while awaiting the Arson Explosives Detail detectives, who responded immediately and processed the package for disposal, Dubin said.

Arson Explosives Detail detectives were conducting an investigation into what appears to be a non-criminal incident.

Meantime, deputies have some advice for anyone finding an explosive.

“If you find something that looks like it could be an explosive, don’t touch it and call law enforcement,” Dubin said.

“Never transport what appears to be an explosive and, in particular, please do not transport the object/package to a law enforcement or fire department facility.”
