Attention, drought-conscious ratepayers: local water wholesalers want to buy your lawn.

On Monday, the Castaic Lake Water Agency announced the launch of its much-anticipated Lawn Replacement Program, through which homeowners are offered $2 for every square foot of lawn they remove from their home.

Participants stand to receive up to $5,000 per property under the program.

“We are excited to offer an option for lawn replacement for residents,” said Stephanie Anagnoson, the agency’s conservation coordinator.

The primary goal of the program is to reduce outdoor water use by removing water-thirsty lawns and encourage new water-efficient landscape options to maintain an aesthetically pleasing sustainable property.

“As we head toward fall, this is a great time to re-evaluate your lawn,” Anagnoson said. “However, this program isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to read all the rules first.

“Most importantly, please do not kill your grass without applying to the program,” she said.

Each customer must meet “design guideline” criteria set up by the agency, then apply to qualify for the program.

Interested parties are urged to read all of the agency’s requirements in the “Process and Design Guidelines” and to read its “terms and conditions” as well to see if their landscape renovations qualify.
