Poem: Our Country

Our world is LOVE,
as varied as its people are
in its expression.

This country,
full of God in its beginnings,
was formed for God by the people and for the people,
people strong in religious fervor.
So strong that its beginnings
are still intertwined amidst this great land.

They believed all people
are created equal in the
eyes and hand of God.
We welcome all peoples, nationalities, races and creeds.

We are as a Tree in this country
that people graft onto as they
enter our lands.
It takes time for that graft
to take and grow well and strong
on the tree.
This we understand.
But we pray only that each graft
realize it is becoming
a part of a new tree,
with new thoughts and beliefs
and that to live with that tree,
must assimilate its ways.

It is difficult, we know,
to assimilate amongst these Free people
for many peoples of the world
who carry with them their homelands values and beliefs.
We know it takes several generations of a family
to meld in with the beliefs and values of our country.
It is difficult, we know, to understand
in the complexities of the Human Being
and molding clay we each are shaped by
the nation we are raised in,
and also by the very history our genes tell us we are.

But Love does shine
and this country expects all people
living within its spheres to accept their principles.
Freedom of speech,
freedom of religious beliefs,
freedom to love.

To have an open heart, an open mind.
To know that to one person
a thought will mean a certain idea
and to another person,
that very same thought will mean another idea.
To be open, and patient and kind
in realizing that we are created equal
and that we must learn to live kindly
with differences that this day,
this City of Los Angeles especially,
holds within its arms.

There are those of us as strong
as the original makers of this great land –
we stand for equality in love,
equality as persons
in equality that surpasses the world flesh that we are,
that surpasses religious beliefs
(this is why we can accept all religions),
that surpasses the various cultures
and that surpasses language itself.

Listen with openness without fear
in a land that has opened its arms to all.
