The evil empire is back.

Much to the chagrin of the rest of the Foothill League schools, Hart High School undeniably put itself back at the top of the athletic mountain this past season.

Need evidence?

For starters, Hart won seven Foothill titles, more than any other school this year.

But it was also about what a lot of those teams did in the postseason.

The football team beat crosstown rival Valencia 28-21 in a memorable CIF-Southern Section Northern Division championship game at Valencia High School on Dec. 6.

It took big-time performances from running back Connor Wingenroth, wide receivers Trent Irwin and Davis Koppenhaver as well as two-way lineman Blake Porter to get the job done.

All four of those players were named All-CIF with Wingenroth earning Offensive Player of the Year honors in Southern Section Northern Division first-team offense.

Hart also placed lineman David Russon, linebacker Garrett Updegraft and defensive back Wes Fitzpatrick on the All-CIF defense.

It was Hart’s ninth CIF football championship and its first in 10 years. It earned the Indians a spot in the CIF Division II state semifinal bowl game against Chaminade.

Hart lost that game 28-10 to finish the season 12-3.

The football team was one of three teams this season that reached at least the CIF semifinals.

Hart’s girls soccer team put together an incredible playoff run, advancing to its first CIF championship game in school history. Behind All-CIF-SS Division II honorees Sophie Cortes, Destinney Duron and Danielle Spickard.

Hart lost 3-2 to Chino Hills in the CIF-SS Division II final before advancing to the CIF Southern California Division II Regional playoffs.

Santa Margarita beat Hart 5-2 in the first round of that bracket.

Hart girls tennis was the third team to make a big postseason push, making it to the CIF-SS Division II semifinals and becoming the first tennis team at the school -- boys or girls -- to reach the 20-win plateau.

Hart wound up finishing 21-2 after losing 5-2 to Campbell Hall in the second round of the CIF Southern California Regional Championship.

Hart made it that far with one of the most impressive singles lineups the Foothill League has ever seen with Proyfon Lohaphaisan, Natalia Munoz and Jackie Resler.

Those three teams alone make for an accomplished season, but we haven’t even gotten to all the league champions.

Three out of the four winter sports crowned Hart as league champions -- boys basketball, boys soccer and the aforementioned girls soccer team.

The boys basketball season was made memorable by walking highlight reel Lewis Stallworth, who was The Signal’s All-Santa Clarita Valley Player of the Year and an All-CIF selection.

Brayon Rodriguez helped Hart soccer break through for its first league crown since 2008. Rodriguez earned All-SCV Player of the Year honors.

In the spring season, Hart baseball survived a competitive league season to take the Foothill title with the help of a stellar pitching staff that included Jack Ralston, Paul Richan and Chad Haslock.

Hart was also helped by All-CIF shortstop Nick Valaika.

And maybe the most surprising league title of the year for Hart came in boys golf, where it pulled ahead late in the season and ended West Ranch’s six-year streak of league titles.

Also on the surprising side for Hart was the lack of Foothill titles by both the boys and girls swim teams.

Hart has dominated the swim scene locally for many years, but that streak was ended by Valencia this spring.

Even so, Hart’s Cole Cogswell collected an individual CIF-SS Division I title in the 100-yard freestyle.

Cogswell later joined teammates Austin Barreiro, Kevin Moore and Matt Johnson to win the CIF crown in the 400 freestyle relay.

And although it wasn’t a banner year for Hart track and field, it had some strong individual highlights with Alex Bernal winning the 800-meter and Liz Sulaiman winning the long jump at the league finals meet.

If there was any question whether Hart was still a team with a target on its back, there shouldn’t be anymore.

For the 2013-14 season, Hart was the class of the Foothill League.

Cue the Star Wars Empire theme song.
