Forest officials: Consequences for use, possession of fireworks

ARCADIA, Calif. — Forest officials want to remind visitors that the possession or use of Fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices including the “safe and sane” variety are prohibited on National Forest System lands year-round.        

During this time of hotter and drier weather coupled with the ongoing drought Angeles Fire Chief James Hall needs the public’s help in stopping fires before they start. 98% of all fires on the Angeles are human caused. “do your part, never leave a campfire unattended or discard your cigarette on the forest floor, and never park your vehicle on dry grass or brush”.  More fire prevention regulations can be found at http://www.fs.usda.gov/angeles/home/ under Fire Conditions. 

Law Enforcement, Fire Prevention Patrols, Fire Engine Crews, and Recreation personnel will be out enforcing regulations. Those found to be in violation will be cited, punishable as a misdemeanor by a maximum fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment of not more than six months, or both.

Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road will be closed to vehicles from10 a.m. Thursday (July 3) to 10 a.m. Monday (July 7) Gates to Chantry Flats and Millard Canyon will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Friday July 4through Monday July 7.  Bicycle and foot travel will be allowed on these roads. The Stoneyvale, Vogel Flats, Wildwood, and Delta Flats recreation sites in lower Big Tujunga Canyon will close at 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday.   

The Fire Danger Level is currently “Very High.” Open wood and charcoal fires are permitted only in developed campgrounds and picnic areas where a steel fire ring and grills are provided.  Visitors are also reminded to ensure that all fires are extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving them.  Petroleum jelly and propane stoves are permitted in non-developed area with a valid California Campfire Permit.
