A 27-year-old man faces several criminal charges today following a high-speed chase that started in Orange County and ended in a scuffle with California Highway Patrol officers in Castaic Tuesday night, a CHP spokesman said.

About 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, a motorist in a 2008 black Nissan Maxima, who allegedly failed to pull over for Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies trying to make a traffic stop, began traveling northbound on Interstate 5, CHP Officer John Lutz told The Signal Wednesday morning.

“He was traveling at varying speeds up to 95 miles per hour,” Lutz said of the chase on some 90 miles of the interstate from Orange County through Los Angeles County and nearly to Kern County.

“He was spike-stripped just south of the lower cross on the 5 freeway,” Lutz said, describing an area in Castaic where the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 cross over each other.

The motorist was traveling up the interstate grade when he was stopped by the spike strip at 11:14 p.m., ending the 95-minute pursuit, Lutz said.

“During the arrest, the motorist became verbally abusive and non-compliant,” he said.

A “minor scuffle” ensued between CHP officers taking the man into custody and the motorist who suffered “some abrasions,” the officer said.

Andres Alvarez-Jeronimo, who turned 27 last month, was arrested on suspicion of failing to yield to law enforcement officers, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, assault, resisting arrest, being under the influence of drugs and in possession of drug paraphernalia.

No CHP officers were hurt during the arrest, Lutz said.

The pursuit began in Lake Forest when deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department tried to pull the motorist over, said Jeff Hallock, spokesman for the department.

“Our deputy initiated a traffic stop at Rockfield and Ridge Route in Lake Forest before the driver fled,” Hallock said. “We handed the pursuit off to the CHP on (the northbound) 5 freeway in the Santa Ana area.”
