Using donated materials, workers Saturday installed a new driveway at a Canyon Country house where Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley provides services to those who are homeless.

The front of the home received a facelift about two years ago, according to officials, but the driveway remained in bad shape.

“This is a very old driveway — it’s been here since the ‘60s,” said Gail Morgan, a board member for Family Promise.

Several members of Santa Clarita’s Public Works Department worked for free on Saturday to install the driveway. Cement and equipment needed to install the driveway were also donated, according to officials.

“They removed all of the old asphalt and they replaced it with a nice concrete driveway,” Morgan said.

Laurie Ender, president of the nonprofit’s board of directors, said she was excited about the new driveway.

“It really helps the whole neighborhood, and we really want to be good neighbors,” she said Saturday.

Family Promise provides meals, shelter, and support services to help homeless people get back on their feet.

“It’s just such a blessing to be in this community, to be able to help the homeless children and their families who need it,” Ender said.

Family Promise uses the Canyon Country house on Delight Street as a resource center.

“They spend their time during the day here with social service agencies, looking for work, getting some education, whatever it is they need,” Morgan said Saturday.

Ender said the issue of homelessness affects many people, even those who may not realize they know someone who is homeless.

“It’s incredible what we can do to help our neighbors, and that’s really what Family Promise is all about,” she said.
