Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives Saturday were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 27-year-old female inmate in the jail at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in Valencia.

While doing a security check at the jail at 23740 Magic Mountain Parkway at about 12:08 p.m. deputies found Jenna Coleman lying on her bed in her cell. She was unresponsive, according to a statement by sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht of the Homicide Bureau.

Los Angeles County Fire Rescue Paramedics responded and pronounced Coleman dead.

Deputies arrested Coleman on Thursday on suspicion of possession of a narcotic controlled substance. She was being held on $10,000 bail.

The cause of death was not known Saturday night, Hecht wrote.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, which routinely investigates in-custody deaths, will determine the cause of death.

No further information was released.

Generally, however, the death of an inmate in the Los Angeles County jail system triggers multiple independent investigations by the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau, and Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, Hecht wrote.

“Justice System Integrity Division personnel from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office intend to attend the autopsy,” Hecht wrote. “Once concluded, every aspect of the death is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Death Review Committee.”
