West Ranch junior Nathan Bultman won a CIF-Southern Section title and finished sixth in state in the shot put.

Even after the single most impressive moment of the season for any Foothill League athlete, Nathan Bultman didn’t go home satisfied.

The West Ranch junior won the CIF-Southern Section Division I shot put championship.

But the first thing he wanted to talk about that day was how he felt let down that he didn’t advance to the CIF-SS Masters Meet in the discus.

He takes equal pride in both events, but he had an off day in discus.

Bultman considers himself a thrower, not just a shot putter. But let’s face it, he was one of the best shot putters in the state all year long.

He finished the season with a sixth-place showing in the shot put state finals with a toss of 58 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

And oh by the way, he was also disappointed with that mark considering he threw his season-best 62-4 three weeks earlier and he went 60-11 1/4 for his CIF title winning throw.

All in all, that ended up being the state’s fifth best throw of the season overall.

He was no slouch in the discus either, with a season-best distance of 172-9 coming in at 24th in the state this year.

He was the epitome of an automatic win in both events during league competition. No other Foothill League thrower even came close to his marks.

This kid is good, and judging by his disappointments, he clearly wants to, and hopes to, be better.

He and his trainer/dad David set their expectations at the very top – and for good reason.

David won a CIF state championship in shot put when he was in high school and went on to earn a scholarship and become a successful thrower at UCLA.

Nathan’s older brother, Nick, went to the state finals in shot put for West Ranch in 2012.

Nathan has already surpassed Nick’s school record in both shot and disc. His next goal is to try to reach his dad’s best high school mark of 67 feet.

For Nathan Bultman, there’s always a higher bar to set.

And this season, no one reached as far as him, which is why he’s The Signal’s 2014 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
