Valencia first baseman Devin Davis is headed to Minneapolis next month to participate in the MLB Junior Select Home Run Derby.

It’s already been a busy summer for Valencia’s Devin Davis.

He’ll have to make room for one more event on his schedule though — and this is a big one.

Davis was selected to participate in the Major League Baseball Junior Select Home Run Derby which will take place during MLB All-Star festivities at Target Field in Minneapolis starting on July 13.

The all-expenses paid trip will include a home-run competition between other top national high school hitting prospects in the days leading up to the MLB All-Star Game on July 15.

Davis and nine other Junior Home Run Derby participants will take part in a meet-and-greet session with MLB players before the game.

“To hear I get to go to the All-Star Game and meet a bunch of pro players, that’s very exciting for me. I was excited. I was jumping up and down,” Davis said.

He was invited to the event by the director of the 2014 USA Baseball Tournament of the Stars, an event in which he competed last week in North Carolina.

Select players from the Tournament of Stars were chosen to make the USA Baseball 18U National Team.

The week before that, Davis was at the Perfect Game USA 2014 National Showcase in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Valencia first baseman and senior-to-be said he’s trying to get his name out there as much as possible in preparation for next year, when he’ll be eligible for the MLB Draft for the first time.

“For me it’s kind of for exposure,” he said of the busy summer schedule. “I want to make the draft, so I just kind of want to open myself up to the scouts and show them my talent and why I should be drafted.”

Davis didn’t make the cut for the USA National Team last week, but he will get to enjoy a pretty impressive consolation prize in the meantime.

This will be his first time attending an MLB All-Star Game, he said.

The initial group of 10 players will face off in a preliminary round on the evening of July 13 at Target Field. From there, the top four finishers move onto the finals, which will be played out during commercial breaks of the big league Home Run Derby on July 14.

This is the second year the MLB is conducting such an event as part of All-Star Week.
