Twenty strokes.

That’s what set Jonathan Kang off.

The Golden Valley High golfer was so embarrassed by his performance at the sixth and final Foothill League golf match of 2013 that the switch turned on.

At that sixth league match, the then-freshman shot a 21-over 93.

The day before at the same golf course (TPC Valencia) in the fifth league match, he shot a 1-over 73.

Kang had motivation for his sophomore year.

He started the Foothill season with a 4-over 76, which put him four strokes behind the first-place golfer in that event.

Entering the third league match, he was five strokes overall behind.

However, Kang remained consistent throughout league play and was the only golfer not to have a blow-up round.

He was the only Foothill Leaguer who didn’t have a round in the 80s.

The difference from 2013 to 2014, as described by his head coach Tony Moskal, was this: “Last year he went out and played golf, but I don’t think he had the ability to play golf.”

Makes perfect sense.

It’s kind of like in baseball where you have a pitcher who is a thrower as opposed to having a pitcher who is a pitcher. Or you have a quarterback who can throw the football, but doesn’t quarterback.

Last year, Kang was golfing on physical ability. The mental part wasn’t there.

This year, Kang would go out on a golf course and manage the course. He would play smartly.

In 2014, Kang was a golfer.

He won the Foothill League Player of the year by a comfortable eight strokes.

His stroke average from 2013 to 2014 dropped off a cliff — from 80.2 to 75.2.

On May 12, he became the first-ever Golden Valley golfer to advance in the CIF individual playoffs when he shot a 1-over 73 at the CIF-Southern Section Northern Individual Regional at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

He followed that up by advancing from the Southern Section Individual Championship on May 27 with a 3-over 74.

Kang fell short of making the CIF State Championship after shooting a 7-over 79 at the CIF/SCGA Southern California Championship on June 2.

However, his season was one of the greatest for an athlete in Golden Valley High history.

Now that Kang is a golfer, his next step is getting bigger and stronger — which will take his game to the next level.

For the 2014 season, we cap his breakthrough year by awarding him the All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Golfer of the Year.
