Chad LeDuff has been the dominant singles player for two straight years in league play.

After roaring through the Foothill League last year without dropping a set, Valencia junior Chad LeDuff came into the 2014 season with a lot of pressure for a repeat performance.

Duplicating perfection is tough, but LeDuff nearly pulled it off again this year, losing only one set and earning his second consecutive All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Tennis Singles Player of the Year title.

LeDuff’s 7-6 loss to Golden Valley’s Brandon Yu on April 22 is the only blemish on his two-year career as a singles player in the Foothill League.

He bounced back in a big way, however, not dropping another set in league play and running through the Foothill League singles tournament without much trouble.

LeDuff didn’t drop a point in the first two rounds and avenged his loss to Yu by beating him 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals before beating West Ranch’s Harrison Collins 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match.

The power of LeDuff’s game is what sets him apart from the rest of the league, especially his serve.

Collins described the sound of a LeDuff serve as a “pistol being shot” after they played for the singles championship.

That power led LeDuff to many 6-0 or 6-1 set victories in league play and helped the Vikings to a 10-0 league record and the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs.

The Vikings lost, but LeDuff contributed two set wins (6-0, 6-0).

In the CIF-Southern Section Individual Tennis Sectionals, LeDuff made his second consecutive run into the second round of the tournament, beating Santa Barbara’s Morgan Hale 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) in the first round before falling to Campbell Hall’s Bryce Periera.

Overall, LeDuff finished 65-6 in sets this year, bringing his record as a singles player to 106-14.

And now with another year under his belt and an offseason to improve and get stronger, expect LeDuff to take another shot at perfection during his senior campaign.
