COC needs to focus attention on the students

I appreciate Jim Holt’s presence at the College of the Canyons Board of Trustees meeting last Wednesday and his subsequent article, “COC showdown” (June 12).

When I began my presentation to the board, one of the first things I talked about was our unfaltering dedication to every one of the 15,000 students who attend this great institution.

We are so fortunate to live in a community that offers exceptional educational opportunities right here in our own backyards, and I am proud to work alongside some of the best instructors in higher education.

In the last several years, we have endured reduced instructional budgets, larger class sizes and increased workload.

COC’s instructors are working harder than ever to shield our students from these repeated attacks on their educational experience.

With the additional funds coming from Proposition 30, which must be spent directly on instructional costs, it is my hope that the college puts its focus squarely on the people it is here to serve: the students.
