Rite Aid closes in Castaic

Another store closure in the Santa Clarita Valley was announced on Tuesday.

The Rite Aid Pharmacy on Castaic Road in Castaic is closing June 17, according to a spokesperson for the chain.

A significant increase in rent at the retail center was cited as the reason for the closure, according to the spokesperson.

“Rite Aid decided not to renew its lease,” she said.

The Ralphs grocery store closed in March.

As for pharmacy customers, all of the prescriptions, plus patient and insurance information, is being automatically transferred to the Walgreens in Castaic on Sloan Canyon Road, confirmed spokespeople for both chains.

“We’ll have all of their prescriptions; they don’t have to get them filled here but we will be calling them to update and welcome them,” said Erik Bozman, Walgreens manager. “Customers don’t need to do anything.”

Although the Walgreens is across the way from the Rite Aid, it is difficult for seniors from Castaic Lake Senior Village to reach if they aren’t mobile or don’t drive.

But Walgreen’s is offering free delivery to them, Bozman said.

“We do deliver,” he said. “They don’t need to come here.”

While unusual in the chain pharmacy industry, Bozman said Rite Aid and Walgreens arranged for a customer transfer a few years ago when Rite Aid was closing its Las Vegas outlets.

If pharmacy customers have any questions, they’re welcome to call the pharmacy manager, Betty Najarian, or store manager, he said.

As for Rite Aid employees, the chain will try to place them in neighboring stores, the spokesperson for Rite Aid said.

Although the pharmacy is closing June 17, the store will be re-opened on June 28 for three weeks while a liquidation sale is conducted, she said.
