SAN FERNANDO — Lance Anderson, the Canyon Country man accused of killing his wife and sister shortly before Christmas, appeared briefly in court Monday on two counts of murder.

Now 61 years old and wearing orange jail coveralls, Anderson was ushered into San Fernando Superior Court Monday by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

With short gray hair and a robust gray beard and mustache, Anderson leaned over and peered at courtroom attendees through a horizontal gap in the wire mesh of a courtroom cage reserved for people in custody.

When Judge Michael O’Gara asked if he understood that he was entitled to a speedy preliminary hearing, Anderson said in a loud, clear voice: “I do.”

When O’Gara asked if Aug. 13 was a suitable date to hold his next court appearance, Anderson said just as loudly: “Or later.”

Anderson, who lived at a Claudette Street condominium complex in Canyon Country, was arrested Dec. 11 on suspicion that he killed his 68-year-old wife, Bertha Maxine Anderson, and his 58-year-old sister, Lisa Florence Nave.

Anderson’s wife died of an apparent gunshot wound, homicide detectives said. His sister was killed in a nursing home in Los Angeles.

Anderson remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.

He is scheduled to appear back in court Aug. 13.
