The dates have been announced for the third annual Foothill Invitational girls volleyball tournament coming up this summer in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The event, hosted by the Los Angeles Volleyball Academy and the city of Santa Clarita, will take place during the weekend spanning from August 8-10 at locations around the area which will be named at a later date.

In the past, the tournament has been held at multiple locations around the SCV, including Saugus, West Ranch and Golden Valley high schools along with the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.

Once again, the plan is to separate the participating teams into various divisions based on level of competition.

According to the announcement on LAVA’s website, there will be two new divisions added this year. The past two summers, teams could compete in the Invitational Division for high-level varsity teams or the Festival Division for lower-level or junior varsity schools.

The plan this year is to add junior varsity and freshman divisions as well.

The list of participating teams isn’t out yet, but local teams are once again expected to make appearances.

Last year, West Ranch, Hart, Saugus, Canyon and Valencia all competed.

There were 24 teams involved last summer and 22 the year before ranging from the San Fernando Valley, Ventura County and the Fresno area. Registration is still open. Teams can apply by visiting lavacademy.com/foothill

More signings: Two former College of the Canyons volleyball players accepted scholarships from four-year colleges.

Hart graduate and libero Cassidy Fitzpatrick is headed to Belhaven University in Mississippi and fellow COC player Jordan Carter signed with California Baptist as a setter.

Both players were named to the All-Western State Conference, South Division first team this past fall as sophomores after the team won its first conference title since 2000.

Fitzpatrick sought out the small Mississippi school, which competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, with the idea of moving somewhere well outside of her home state.

“She was wiling to take a chance on going somewhere different and changing the pace of her life,” said COC head volleyball coach Lisa Hooper, who said Fitzpatrick has a good chance to start in her first year at Belhaven.

Fitzpatrick tallied 354 digs for an average of 4.32 digs per set with COC last season. Carter, an Apple Valley High graduate, had 785 assists and 213 digs.

She’ll be joining a Cal Baptist team that competes in NCAA Division II.
