Hello, Santa Clarita Valley! Welcome to The-Signal.com's Daybreak, your point of entry for the day, and a quick journey through the past, present and future. Let the adventure begin:

First Word
"It’s unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interests of the United States." -- President Barack Obama

Today is Wednesday, April 22, the 112th day of 2009. There are 253 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On April 22, 1898, with the United States and Spain on the verge of formally declaring war, the U.S. Navy began blockading Cuban ports. Congress authorized creation of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, also known as the “Rough Riders.”

 Five years ago:
NFL player Pat Tillman, who’d traded in a multimillion-dollar contract to serve as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan, was killed by friendly fire; he was 27.

Watercooler Talk
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — A state judge who said he lost patience with an unruly defendant ordered court officials to cover the man’s mouth with duct tape. The unusual move was ordered Monday by 6th District Judge Peter D. McDermott during a probation violation hearing for Nicklas Frasure. The 23-year-old Frasure was convicted of felony theft in 2008 and recently released from prison.

During the hearing, Frasure made repeated outbursts and ignored the judge’s orders to refrain from interrupting the court. The judge then ordered bailiffs to silence Frasure. The Idaho State Journal reported that bailiffs found a roll of duct tape, tore off a piece and put it over his mouth. The judge ordered Frasure placed in the custody of the Department of Correction mental health facility in Boise.

The teacher taught marketing at the school and previously served as a coach for the district’s eighth-grade cheerleaders.

Corrections
Dave Bossert was referred to as president of the West Ranch Town Council. He is the vice president (“Organizers hope that Castaic reconsiders,” April 17).
A story about Sunday’s Santa Clarita Valley Dodger Day (“SCV Dodger Day,” April 20) said that Camille Gray, an area student, would sing “America, the Beautiful” during the game’s Seventh-inning Stretch. Gray sang “God Bless America.”
