Canyon boys tennis takes a very pivotal match

The sixth match of the Foothill League tennis season may have proved to be the biggest one for both Canyon and Hart Thurs-day afternoon.

The winner would essentially have the inside track on the final team spot from the Foothill League for the CIF-Southern Section boys tennis playoffs. The loser would be on the outside looking in.

Canyon is that team with the inside track after dealing the Indians a 10-8 loss at Canyon High.

“We considered this to be the pivotal match,” said Canyon head coach Kent Ganevsky. “We knew this would be a tough game.”

The first time these squads met, the Cowboys (9-4, 4-2) prevailed — barely.

A 9-9 match March 24 went to games, with Canyon edging Hart 84-79.

This time around, the Cowboys threw a different doubles lineup out and were successful.

Sophomores Derek Rosengrant and Alex DeGuzman and the team of Harry Lee and Cory Yamaoka teamed up for the first time together and pulled out two doubles victories.

Those wins were key because Canyon’s No. 1 team was able to only muster one victory.

Canyon No. 1 singles player Jason Ferliano, recovered from the flu, was nearly untouchable Thursday, sweeping 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

Hart (6-8, 2-4) received a pair of wins each from veteran Garrett Russikoff and Joe Reyes on the singles side and two more from Kevin Tanner and Austin Morgan on the doubles side.

“This pretty much decided that we’re out of the playoffs unless we get some miracle wins,” said Hart head coach Chris Mansfield. “This was a big match.”

Canyon is to win its two matchups next week, then will face second-place West Ranch on April 28.
