Transit officials are hoping to ease the morning commute out of Santa Clarita Valley.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for today to mark the completion of 6.2 miles of carpool lanes on the Interstate 5, from the Newhall Pass south to Highway 118. The ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office, located at 13800 Balboa Blvd.

Several state and local officials are to attend the event, including Will Kempton, director of the California Department of Transportation, 38th District Assemblymen Cameron M. Smyth and county Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

These are the first carpool lanes on the I-5 in Los Angeles County, according to a Caltrans news release, and their purpose is to improve mobility and relieve congestion, as well as to encourage carpooling and improve air quality.
