Right-wing jokesters

I am in agreement with Michael Cruz and his letter about unity (“It’s about unity, not pork,” April 5). His comments about President Reagan and Speaker Tip O’Neil remind me of a story I heard first-hand recently.

I am fortunate to work with Senator Bill Bradley and he related a story to me about the Reagan tax cuts. He sat with President Reagan and asked about 25 questions he had written on a legal pad. When the president answered them to the senator’s satisfaction, the senator voted for the bill regardless of the Democratic party position.

He voted for what he thought best for the country, not for what would keep him or his party in power.

This is real bipartisanship, which is sorely lacking in this country at the moment. We have a party in the minority which is the party of no. Instead of learning from their mistakes of the last eight years they continue with failed policies and obstructing real progressive change for the better. Their budget proposal is a joke, their leadership is in shambles.

Instead they focus on the Queen’s iPod, Michelle’s wardrobe, the IMF taking over America’s government and all the distractions they are famous for. In the meantime, the base is getting their news from Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly and that moron Dennis Miller. Every letter to The Signal is just packed with right-wing talking points instead of intelligent commentary.

Rants about socialism, Nazism and communism spewed by people that never opened an economics book or even used Google to get the facts, fill the airwaves. No critical thinking here.

When nearly 70 percent of the country (according to a Wall Street Journal right-wing poll) supports the president and his ideas. Perhaps these people should wake up and realize they are still pushing failed ideologies and should just let the adults get on with the job of fixing what they broke.

Believing in the benefits of bipartisanship is one thing. However, when the minority has no ideas and nothing constructive to offer, what can you do but laugh?
