Canyon softball ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday, and there simply wasn’t much the Cowboys could do about it.

Facing CIF-Southern Section Division I No. 1 seeded Pacifica of Garden Grove, the Cowboys managed just two hits in a 6-0 loss at Pacifica High.

“She was very good, she threw hard, high 60s, and she was in and out,” said Canyon head coach Tim Melton of Pacifica pitcher Kaylee Carlson. “A great drop ball, tremendous change-up, she kept us off balance all day.”

Amanda Doyle had both hits for Canyon, which ends its season at 14-14, including Monday’s 1-0, wild-card victory over Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley.

“I think the future is very bright,” said Melton, who concludes in his first season as head coach of the Cowboys. “We have the JV team that finished first in league, so we have a lot of young, talented players. We have some travel ball players coming in that, from what I understand, are varsity material. Our young pitching is going to be a year older — the future looks bright at Canyon.”

On Tuesday, Jessica Goodspeed and Brittany workman combined to pitch the first four innings for Canyon, and Nicole Dall pitched the final two, allowing one run on a solo shot to the first batter she faced.

From there she didn’t allow a hit.

But the damage had already been done by Pacifica (25-4-1).

Said Melton on if it was clear why Pacifica was the No. 1 seed: “It was a well coached team. They have a great pitcher, a great catcher, all those combined I can see them going far.”

For Canyon, despite the loss, Melton is confident the experience of the 2014 season will lead to even more success next season.

Canyon loses six seniors in Julianna Carlos, Tiffany Dyson, Dall, Kaelie Doyle, Delanie George and Krystal Navarro.

“It was a great experience for the girls,” Melton said. “I was happy for the seniors, they got to experience the playoffs. Really happy for the returners to experience because it’s something to build on for next year. The bar raised a little more. Now we’re a playoff team.”
