A group of young, late arrivals to Canyon varsity softball has injected new life into the team.

And now the Canyon Cowboys are playing as good as they have all season at an ideal time.

Freshman pitcher and recent junior varsity callup Jessica Goodspeed helped Canyon shut out Canyon Springs of Morena Valley 1-0 on Monday in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs at Canyon Springs High School.

Goodspeed was one of a handful of freshman and sophomore players who were snagged from JV a few weeks ago in an effort to provide a needed spark.

“We brought up some little freshman and sophomores that have just brought new life and energy back into the team,” said Canyon head coach Tim Melton. “They’ve been accepted by the girls and they’re playing as a team now.”

Goodspeed has earned the regular starting role in the circle and she proved why on Monday by going five shutout innings and allowing three hits.

Sophomore Brittany Workman — playing for the first time in two weeks after an elbow injury — picked it up from there and finished the game by tossing two perfect innings.

“The pitching was outstanding today,” Melton said. “Our defense was incredible. The girls played like they did at the beginning of the season.”

With the wind blowing hard and keeping hard-hit balls in the park, runs were tough to come by for either school.

Canyon (14-13) scored the game’s only run when Julianna Carlos doubled home Paige Johnson in the fourth innings. Johnson was also aboard by hitting a double.

The rest was up to the Cowboys’ strong defensive effort, particularly from Johnson at third base, Kaelie Doyle at shortstop and Tiffany Dyson at second.

Those three were big factors in keeping Canyon Springs (15-14) off the board.

Canyon’s win moves it to the first round, where it will travel to face the No. 1 seed in Division I, Pacifica High of Garden Grove today.

The game starts at 3:15 p.m.
