Four Foothill golf teams out of playoffs

The team playoffs have not been kind to the Foothill League lately.

For the third straight season, the league failed to advance any teams beyond the first round of the CIF postseason.

This year, it was four teams — Hart, West Ranch, Valencia and Saugus — which all fell short on Monday.

Hart, West Ranch and Valencia, the top three finishers in league play, competed at Soule Park Golf Club in Ojai for the CIF-Southern Section Northern Team Divisional. Meanwhile, Saugus, the league’s at-large qualifier, was at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande for the CIF-SS Central Coast Team Divisional.

The top two teams at each location moved on.

None of the local teams came close.

At Soule Park, Hart was the top Foothill finisher with a team score of 408 led by Cory David’s round of 80.

That was 33 strokes behind what was needed to advance.

Westlake was the overall team winner at 362 and La Canada was second at 375.

Following Hart was West Ranch at 410 and Valencia at 411.

The three teams finished in the same order they did in the final league standings.

“For us it was a learning year,” said West Ranch head coach Jeff Holen. “Learning in the sense that we can’t just go with what we’ve done in the past, we’ve got to keep working on our game.”

Saugus, the Foothill’s fourth-place finisher, posted a fifth-place score of 419 at Cypress Ridge. That was also well short of the mark needed to finish top two.

Ventura was the top team at Cypress Ridge at 397, followed by Oaks Christian at 399.

Saugus’ Braden Lewis recorded the day’s top individual score of any Foothill League golfer with a 74. Fellow Saugus golfer Aden De Los Reyes shot a 77.

“I thought we did pretty well,” said Saugus head coach Dave Stradling. “Braden and Aden played well. They both shot in the 70s. We hung in there for a little bit.”

Back at Soule Park, Valencia’s Glenn Teagle shot a 77, to lead all Foothill Leaguers on the course.

Few golfers were able to keep their scores low in the blustery, difficult conditions.

“The greens were a bit tricky. You’ve got to play really well,” said Valencia head coach Robert Waters. “But we’re building for next year.”

Danny DiMaria led West Ranch with an 80. Hart’s Lorenzo Torres followed with an 81 and six more Foothill League golfers carded 82s.

Though the team portion of playoffs are finished for the locals, there are still four golfers alive in the individual golf playoffs.

The Saugus duo of Lewis and De Los Reyes, along with Golden Valley’s Jonathan Kang and Hart’s Michael Lotta, will play in the CIF-SS Championship and SCGA Qualifying Tournament on May 27 at Mission Lakes Country Club.
