Burglars stole everything but the horse it seems when they made off with close to $10,000 worth of saddles, bridles and other horse riding equipment from stables in Acton recently, according to local sheriff’s deputies.

The incident is one of two such recent thefts in which saddles were stolen, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputy reported.

Sometime between 7:30 p.m. May 11 and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, thieves got into a locked and “alarmed storage room” in the stables in Acton and stole saddles, helmets, bridles and other equipment, he wrote in the incident log maintained at the local sheriff’s station.

“The victim stated that when she returned to the storage room ...  it was locked and the alarm was still activated.  The victim informed me that the stable employees and customers have the codes to both the alarm and the combination lock,” the deputy wrote in his report.

“I observed several empty saddle shelves. It also appeared as though the horse blankets and trunk boxes had been gone through,” he said.

The stolen items included three saddles “with irons attached” each valued at $4,000, $2,500 and $1,100.

Thieves also stole four helmets, reins, bits and a long, black braided rope valued at $20.

In a separate incident that occurred in Quartz Hill between April 17 and May 10, horse equipment was also reported stolen.

Santa Clarita Valley deputies listed the crime as grand theft with at least $2,400 in merchandise taken, including two saddles.

The victim told deputies that he returned home to find that “someone had stolen a brand New Mexican style saddle from his front porch area,” deputies reported.

The investigation into both incidents is continuing.
