The Santa Clarita Valley will be abuzz with activities this weekend, including a celebration of triumph over cancer that draws thousands, two “starts” to the Amgen Tour of California, and plenty of potential traffic jams.

Road closures for the bicycle race actually began Thursday in Newhall as Main Street between Market and Sixth streets was shut down to prepare the area’s staging area.

The Amgen Tour of California takes off from downtown Newhall at 11:35 a.m. today.

Rolling road closures will occur along Sierra Highway, Placerita Canyon Road, Sand Canyon Road and Bouquet Canyon Road as the cyclists leave the valley, only to return via vehicle for the Stage 7 start Saturday.

Besides the road closures, the off- and on-ramps of Highway 14 for Placerita Canyon Road and Sand Canyon Road will be closed for part of the day today.

The 94.4-mile Stage 6 course takes racers from an elevation low of about 500 feet to an elevation high of some 7,500 feet.

In Newhall at 4:30 p.m. today is the Lifetime of Achievement award presentation to Connie Worden-Roberts, one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s longest-serving and most effective volunteer leaders.

The event is scheduled at Hart Hall inside William S. Hart Park, and a reception follows the presentation.

On Saturday, more road closures are in order as the Tour of California Stage 7 Start is held at Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Stage 7 will take racers from the mall up Bouquet Canyon Road, across Vasquez Canyon and Sand Canyon roads to Soledad Canyon Road, and again toward the San Gabriel Mountains. Rolling road closures will be in effect.

The race course will shut down Bouquet Canyon during the hugely popular Relay for Life fundraiser to fight cancer, which is held at Central Park on Bouquet Canyon Road.

Bouquet is scheduled to be shut down from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., but times could vary.

The Relay for Life opening ceremony is at 9 a.m., with a survivors lap scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and the luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. The annual Relay, held over a 24-hour period, draws thousands of people each year.

Besides the Tour of California road closures Saturday, Highway 14 freeway on- and off-ramps will be shut down part of the day for Sand Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon/Shadow Pines road for the bicycle race.

Plenty of other activities in the Santa Clarita Valley are on tap Saturday, including:

Cub Scout Cup: This ninth annual event at Hart Park features team competition of physical and mental challenges that build teamwork and reinforce scouting values. Parents interested in enrolling their boys in Cub Scouts are particularly welcome. Details at www.cubscoutcup.com.

At 6 p.m. at Bridgeport Clubhouse in Valencia, Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley hosts its third “Gentlemen for a Cause” fundraiser, featuring 26 gentlemen offering a variety of professional services ranging from plumbing to massage therapy.
