Canyon, for all intents and purposes, knew it was locked into the Foothill League’s fourth place entering Thurday’s regular season finale with Hart at Canyon High School.

But a win, nonetheless, was the difference between possibly entering the CIF-Southern Section Division I postseason, or going home empty handed.

The Cowboys came through, defeating Hart 10-4 to improve to 13-13 overall and 3-7 in league. That gives them the necessary .500 record to be eligible for at-large consideration.

Now, all Canyon can do is wait for Saturday’s 2 p.m. bracket release to see if it did enough to move on.

“I thought the final two weeks of the season we played tough,” said Canyon head coach Tim Melton. “Our 13-13 record, we played some of the top teams in CIF. Camarillo three times, West Ranch in our league twice, Saugus twice, Valencia twice, Vista Murrieta; we played a brutal, brutal schedule — Orange County tournament — we really upped the ante, the bar was raised high.”

On Thursday, Nicole Dall pitched five innings for Canyon, allowing four runs.

In relief, Jessica Goodspeed finished the game with two scoreless innings.

Amanda Doyle had a home run for Canyon.

For Hart (8-20, 1-9), Raquel Blanchard was 1-for-2 with a walk, home run and three RBIs, Abby Sweet was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Katy Nelson went 2-for-3.
