History continues to repeat itself when Saugus swimmer Abbey Weitzeil dives into the water at the CIF-Southern Section Division I prelims, which took place Thursday at the Riverside Aquatics Complex ahead of Saturday’s final.

With four CIF titles under her belt already in her young career, the junior was the top qualifier in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.21 seconds Thursday.

That mark broke the California state record set in 2010 by St. Francis of Mountain View's Maddy Schaefer.

But Weitzeil wasn't done yet.

She turned around 100 free and set another state record, besting Schaefer's record to qualify first with a 48.75.

Hart’s Tamara Santoyo also made the finals in the 50 free event, finishing with the fourth fastest time at 23.50.

Santoyo was even more impressive in the 100 butterfly, posting the top prelims time of 54.08. She was joined by teammate Mik Ranslem, whose 55.62 was the fifth fastest.

On the boys side, it was Hart’s Cole Cogswell making the biggest headlines of any Foothill League swimmer.

Cogswell was the top finisher in the 200 free (1 minute, 37.34 seconds), while teammate Matt Johnson was sixth (1:39.62).

Cogswell matched the feat in the 100 free with a 44.42.

Johnson will also swim in the 500 free final.

Valencia’s Nikol Popov and Ranslem both made the finals of the girls 200 individual medley, while the Vikings Kevin Dai was the only finalist on the boys side of the event.

But it was the 100 breast where Popov really impressed, finishing as the top qualifier (1:02.11).

Dai also qualified for the 100 free, posting the third-fastest time of 45.47.

The boys 50-free final features Justin Lee of Saugus and Kevin Moore of Hart.

Valencia’s Sophie Fiscella qualified eighth in the girls 100 backstroke, while teammate Jessie Kim was fifth in the boys 100 back.

In the relays, the Hart boys finished first in the 200-free relay, and will be joined in the final by Valencia.

The Valencia girls placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay, while the Valencia boys were seventh. The Valencia girls were fifth in the 200-free relay, while the Hart girls were seventh.

In the 400-free relay, the Hart girls are the lone Foothill representative in the final, while the Hart boys are joined by Saugus in the boys final.
