Four SCV golfers advance in playoffs

Last year, we had zero boys golfers advance from the first round of the CIF postseason.

This year, the Foothill League would have none of that failure.

Four Foothill Leaguers advanced to the second round of the state tournament with qualifying scores at the CIF-Southern Section Northern Individual Regional on Monday at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

Just 20 golfers out of the 105 at the event advanced — including Saugus’ Braden and Aden combo (Lewis and De Los Reyes), who finished as the runner-up and third-place finisher at the event, respectively.

Golden Valley sophomore and Foothill Player of the Year Jonathan Kang and Hart’s Michael Lotta also advanced.

Braden Lewis, Aden De Los Reyes and Loyola’s Daniel Lopez all tied for second place with 1-under 71s and went into a playoff for runner-up at the event.

Lewis and De Los Reyes both faced 20-foot birdie putts from opposite sides of the green.

Lewis made his putt, De Los Reyes settled for a par and Lopez - bogey.

“I was excited,” Lewis said about entering into a playoff with his Saugus teammate. “I figured it would be fun. I didn’t dwell on who would win second.”

Said De Los Reyes: “We had a lot of fun out there. He made the putt, I didn’t.”

Both golfers have had interesting seasons.

Lewis was a Foothill League Player of the Year favorite going into the season, but quietly finished second — quietly because Kang built momentum early and never looked back.

De Los Reyes closed well in Foothill play, moving up from 10th overall after the fourth league match to finishing fifth overall.

Kang has been the most consistent golfer in the Foothill League in 2014.

He shot a 1-over 73 to become the first Golden Valley boys golfer to ever advance in a playoff.

“It feels good to represent this school and this golf program, which usually hasn’t had this much success,” Kang said.

Kang became the first Golden Valley boys golfer to qualify for a playoff when he did so last year. He missed advancing by one stroke.

Lotta, from the Foothill League champion Hart Indians, shot a 2-over 74, coming in just below the cut.

Hart’s Cory David (78) and West Ranch’s Danny DiMaria (79) didn’t advance.

The next step for the Foothill quartet is the Southern Section Championship and SCGA Qualifying Tournament (the second of four rounds of the state playoffs). That will be played May 27 at Mission Lakes Country Club.
