Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District officials celebrated Monday as ground was broken on the first permanent structure at Vasquez High School, an event for which parents and district officials have waited some 15 years.

The construction had been anticipated since the school was established in temporary structures in 1999.

Voters turned down several proposed bond measures to construct a permanent school in the tiny district, and after a 2008 bond measure was finally passed, delays were imposed by the Great Recession.

“Now you’re seeing construction; you’re seeing grading,” Vasquez Principal Ty Devoe said in an interview with The Signal shortly before Monday’s ceremony. “People seeing that are going to know that it’s really happening.”
